The Goodies, Doctor Who… where is Monkey?

In which I find myself reliving my favourite programs from younger days.

Hmm… I’ve posted even less than usual lately. As I have previously mentioned, I am slowly building a new version of the site that will be more focussed (design-wise) and useful. Unfortunately it’s not quite ready yet, and so every time I post something new here, it makes more work for me when transferring. I have been coding update scripts as I change stuff, but there’s always something that can go wrong with a regular expression.

I went to the Goodies’ show a couple of weeks ago. I’d write a ‘review’, but to say I’m slightly biased would be a gross understatement. So, if you were unable to attend, I’ll leave you with your imagination and the knowledge that you missed something worthwhile that probably won’t ever be repeated. (Cue press release of world tour…)

I just watched the first episode of the new Doctor Who series. The writing is pretty good: plenty of comedy tempered with plenty of meaningful prose. I’m really looking forward to its development over the coming weeks. The Doctor and Rose (the companion) are different, but in a good way. It’s not as ’smooth’ as the American shows (which I’ve been swamped with recently) but that’s what makes Doctor Who so good and refreshing. Some of the visual effects didn’t quite work, but I imagine they’ll improve as the vis-effects team settles in to the show. At least the sets never wobbled. The music is interesting. Some of the soundtrack was a bit cheesy, but I can forgive that. I hope they’ll get some of the more experimental stuff into it in the future as they often did in years past. Hopefully future settings will encourage it. Anyway, if this is a sign of things to come, I’ll certainly be firing up Azureus next Sunday.

Now, if They would just do something new with Monkey, I’d be able to relive the three shows that I remember most fondly from my younger days.

(I’m not very good at reviews, as I find it so hard to be at all negative, so I don’t plan on making it a habit.)

Yaaay! New posts are so very enjoyable, I do so enjoy reading them. I’m also very interested to see this new MA system, and I do wish I had gone to see the goodies, but money is shrot at the moment.

As for reviewing technique, it helps if you’ve seen enough of the genre that there is very little new to you, it helps bring out cynicism. The best way to do this with movies, (although it rarely works for series), is to watch about 4 average movies in the same genre in a row…

Aand in other news, the new doctor has quit the role because he fears typecasting. This is quite ironic, because he’ll be forever typecast as that bloke who fears typecasting. More so, it practically guarantees he’ll never get a starring role in anything ever again, bloody actors.

Hmm… yes. It’s a shame, because he’s quite interesting, and an annoyance, because it makes me wonder why I should bother to become interested in this Doctor if he only lasts for 13 episodes.
