If that was Doom 3…
Some small thoughts on Doom 3, post finis. More random stuff.
Well, I finished Doom 3 this afternoon, and the ending was very satisfying, much more so than Far cry. One can’t help comparing the two, since they are somewhat similar in their story/characters and graphically. The heat shimmer effects in Far Cry are much more realistic and more consistently applied, and the effects of walking through steam vents are more interesting. Doom’s explosions, though pretty, don’t seem to have enough effect on surrounding objects (that is, physics objects and the player; enemies are ok). If you fire a missile into a stack of barrels, you expect them to fly all over the place, but in Doom 3 they barely move. The torch light doesn’t reflect off most windows or mirrors, and some materials don’t cast shadows. The marine doesn’t cast shadows, either, though in multiplayer he does (perhaps it’s an option I missed).
Of course, I couldn’t do anywhere near as good a job at the same task as the id people, so who am I to complain? That’s why I generally avoid opinions: I hate ignorant judgement, and I always feel ignorant. A flawed philosophy? Perhaps. Anyway, whatever I say, overall, it’s a fantastic game. For every niggle, there’s a hundred good things; and, like Far Cry, it does best the one thing that all immersive games should aspire to above all else: create atmosphere. I’ll be interested to see how Half life 2 compares with it’s two cousins.
Is the upcoming Doom movie a good idea? For that matter, is the upcoming Far Cry movie a good idea?
The problem with disposable income is that you’re tempted to spend it. I got The Sims 2 which is fun, and I expect to order W40k: Dawn of War this week. Why did they call it Dawn of War? Aren’t the wars supposed to have gone on for many thousands of years in the W40k universe? Story aside, though, the demo looks stunning and plays very well.
Only a couple of days until Star Wars arrives!
Fear the coming of The Dark Prince!

w00t to finishing Doom 3. It’s definitely a good game for the money, which is what really matters.
Looking forward to W40k:Dawn of War as well. When it’s released we shall have to have some LAN action.

When’s this Dork Prince character coming along anyway? I’ve been waiting impatiently to read whatever wisdom spews forth

On some hypothetical Wednesday not sooner than four weeks from today.
