Network woes

Networking in Windows is shitty, but we already knew that.

I’m perplexed. I’ve been having trouble getting the Internet to go at any sort of decent speed on Aelfwine (connected to the router by cable). Aelfsciene works perfectly over a wireless connection.

First I tried uninstalling the adapter drivers… no change. I booted into Linux to make sure it wasn’t a hardware problem, and no, it worked perfectly in that OS. So, I guessed it must be a software issue in XP. I fiddled for a while to no avail, and decided that a reformat and reinstall would be necessary. I just completed the process of moving the harddisk into Aelfsciene, copying the data, moving it back to Aelfwine, reinstalling Windows, moving the hard disk back to Aelfsciene, copying the data back, and reconnecting to Aelfwine (all these Aelfs… I knew it would be fun :)). After all that (a couple of hours fiddling), the damned thing still refuses to go more than about 2kBps average. Fuck.

It seems to start downloads at a reasonable speed, but then quickly slows until it just stops. About ten minutes later, you might have a page. I’m at a loss. I might have to get a new network card and see if that helps. Oh well.

I’m running this page from Alefsciene for the moment. You can tell that I’ve changed the design somewhat. There are still some bits and pieces to sort out, but I’m quite fond of it at the moment.
