Good and not so good
My computer is almost here. Uni is annoying: honours thesis due date still not confirmed, but I have the printed word on my side.
I ordered the rest of the computer components yesterday, and I should hopefully be able to pick them all up on Saturday. This means that I could have my new machine running by Sunday afternoon (provided I don’t fry any of the components with static electricity or something similarly nasty). I’m not looking forward to plugging everything in, since even the case alone has about 75 cables that have to be plugged somewhere. I am looking forward to trying out UT2003 on it, though.
I’m getting progressively more agitated with the Uni for the current state of their Honours coordination. On one hand we have the head of school complaining about Honours students taking too long to complete their thesis, but on the other we have a coordinator who has pretty much abandoned the job and whose replacement does not start until the 22nd. Where am I supposed to go to sort out my due date? I currently have two fronts of attack, but neither has been particularly successful as of yet, and I am thus left in an extremely uncomfortable state of limbo. Whatever they say, I have the printed word on my side:
Students may take two years to complete from the end of their second year.
Read it and weep.

Bugger. The monitor is holding things up, and it looks as though I’ll have to wait until Wednesday to get the CPU, mobo, RAM, keyb &mouse, speakers, and the monitor. That’s a shit.
Anyway, I will probably still be able to pick up the other parts (video card, hard drive, cd–rw, dvd–rom) tomorrow, but the video card may hold things up there as well.
Bugger.

And I knew this would happen: today I see the video card I have ordered about $100 cheaper. It’s now too late for me to change it for various reasons, but as I say, I knew it would happen.

Hrmm, well, cancel and get back $100.. But yes, the same thing happened with my system *after* I bought it…but at least this way you won’t find one of the drives missing when you unpack it.
As for wiring it together, well, this way they won’t complain about voided warrantee when you take a part in, so it should be worth it.
I guess this means you won’t want an Acorn Emulator just yet then
Oh, and I just noticed the comment numbers, very nice, that way I won’t make an out–by–one error again…

Now I’ll have to wait until next Saturday to collect everything, since my hatred of driving (especially in traffic in the city where I don’t know my way) has stopped me from going on my own this Wednesday. Good things come to those who wait, they say.

I can understand the avoidance of driving
I also presume that you are cancelling on the video card and getting it cheaper?

Oh…and there might be another *old* comment too…

Yes, I’ve cancelled it. Now the thing is I can go for the same card and save $158, or I can go for the next card up (ASUS V9980Ultra TVD 256mb) and still save $16. Hmmm… DVD’s or a slightly faster card? Big decisions…

OK, so everything’s ordered, and will hopefully be ready this Saturday. I decided to go for the next video card up, which is the top ASUS Nvidia card. So I now have three places to go on Saturday.

Well, I hope to see some new entries when the computer is built.
For me, life is busy as usual, but nothing new there. I hope to test out the UT2003 net protocol, and test for bugs and efficiency. Purely for the purposes of education…
