The Glorious Melding
In which it is told of my like of computer games, my lack of creative drive, and a way to bind my two favourite hobbies.
I have long wanted to write a complete and finished computer game. My various attempts almost all lasted only a few days before I lost interest. The only game I actually finished was a text adventure game with a GUI that was for a Uni assignment. I’m quite proud of it; it uses a lot of pretty complex and useful methods.
I have been thinking recently of ways to encourage my further development of Eshtári. One way is through this very website, although it has its weaknesses: primarily, that I don’t have access to it from my bed (which is where I do a lot of writing). I thought last night that I could write a C program that emulates a Wiki, which I could install on my old laptop without needing a webserver and goodness knows what else. That probably won’t happen, though, due to complexity and lack of drive.
Anyway, to get back to the games, I’m thinking that rather than hold out for some non-existant AD&D type friends to show up wanting to tramp through Eshtari, I should create my own RPG engine that could form a crucible for my creation. It would be a glorious meld of my two main hobbies, and might even be a testbed for some HLA experimentation. I think it’s a great idea, but a lot of work.
