Money makes the world go ’round
I hate money, but it’s nice to have it occasionally. Musings follow on the possibilities provided by a potential influx of monetary reimbursement.
I hate the even the notion of money, and I wish the world worked without it. I believe it, along with power, is at the root of all evil. Unfortunately, the world does use money, and it can be good when you have it. The job mentioned previously has been approved, so I have now six weeks of work, which I suppose will take place in January and February. I wonder what percentage of the $5k I’ll be given. If it’s all for me, it comes out to a bit less than $21 per hour (given that I work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for 6 weeks), which is probably about right. It’ll be interesting to find out.
Hopefully, with this sudden rise in wealth, I’ll be able to purchase the new computer I’ve been longing for. I want to get a real beast of a box, so that I can play all the latest games without having to turn the resolution and detail down to 640×480, aliased, and low. And, more importantly perhaps, so that I can build my 3D viewer with more speed and coolness.
With this possibility, I now have to consider how I’m going to rearrange the existing (non-existant) setup of computers in this house. I originally wanted to shift this machine into a purely Linux-based proxy/webhost/etc. machine, and have the new box running XP as its primary OS. The problem with that is the problem with the current setup: I wouldn’t have full use of the new machine. So, I think I will need to keep Windows on this box as well, and maybe buy an old machine to use as a Linux box. For its purpose, it wouldn’t have to be anything special.
So, if I spend ~$3500 on a computer, that would leave ~$1500. Some of that would have to go elsewhere, so say I had ~$700 left. I would need to get some network hardware, but I would easily be able to afford an old P3 or something. It wouldn’t need any peripherals or a monitor, so it’d be really cheap. Cool, I can’t wait.
