Damn the world
In which one takes a dim view of the world and its mother. My CD burner is dead.
Well, I finished a stupid essay on DVD piracy for a stupid subject called Professional Development. At least I managed to hand it in only an hour-and-a-half late.
My CD burner has always irked me. It has always done wierd things, such as not opening when one wants it to. But now, finally, it seems to have given up and died. It started with a nasty error that rebooted my machine. After that, it decided that it wouldn’t recognise CD-Rs and CD-RWs as writeable media, so Nero and WinXP were both left asking for a compatible medium to be inserted. But I could still read CDs. Bitch. Now, it intermittently disappears, and my hard-disk light goes on permanently. That suggests something is wrong with the IDE cables or some such… perhaps I’ll open the box (gasp!) and check it out. Otherwise, I’ll have to purchase a nice shiny new CD burner.
Other than that, I’m fine.
Update (2003-10-07): So I opened the box, and was confronted with a tonne of dust. I got rid of most of it, then checked that the IDE cables were pushed in properly. After a reboot, I retried burning, and this time Nero did accept the CD-RW, and even burnt a little bit, but then threw a “SCSI Target error” and the burn stopped. Trying then with XP, it reverted to it’s old habit of requesting media despite it being there.
Other than that, and a sore shoulder muscle, I’m fine.
